Mountfitchet House supports hospital knitting appeal

Mountfitchet House care home on High Lane in Stansted, is supporting The Princess Alexandra Hospital in its bid to source Twiddle Muffs for people living with dementia.  

Twiddle Muffs are knitted woollen muffs ribbons, large buttons or textured fabrics attached, that patients living with dementia can twiddle in their hands whilst on the wards at the hospital.

The Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow, is asking local knitters to put their skills to good use by making their own Twiddle Muffs for patients. 

Christopher Tuckett, lead falls prevention team at The Princess Alexandra Hospital, said: "We are hoping that volunteers, including staff, patients and visitors, will get involved in our appeal for Twiddle Muffs.” 

“They are an excellent way of helping to combat the restlessness and agitation that may be experienced by patients living with dementia. This project is part of a wide range of work we are doing to support our patients and we are grateful to the care team at Mountfitchet House for their support.” 

Mountfitchet House is a drop-off point for Twiddle Muffs and is encouraging anyone who would like to support the appeal to bring their creations to the care home. 

Allison Squires, home manager at Mountfitchet House, said: “We are delighted to be able to support The Princess Alexandra Hospital’s campaign as we see daily how useful Twiddle Muffs can be to people living with dementia. They are a great source of visual, tactile and sensory stimulation whilst at the same time keeping hands snug and warm. 

“We are so grateful to have already received more than twenty Twiddle Muffs and now we want to join The Princess Alexandra Hospital in encouraging more people to get knitting!”
