Bury St Edmunds care home pays tribute to war heroes

Home news

Residents from Davers Court care home were joined by the Mayor of St Edmundsbury, Julia Wakelam, and members of the armed forces for a special Remembrance Day service held at the home.

Davers Court invited guests to the service which included the unveiling of a memorial statue to commemorate the bravery of British soldiers. The marble book monument has been set within the grounds of the care home, as a lasting tribute to servicemen and women, and loved ones who fought in battle.

The care home raised money for the cenotaph through various fundraising events throughout the year and was also supported by a donation from Suffolk County Councillor, Trevor Beckwith.

The project was organised by Mrs Wilkinson, a relative of a resident at the home, who wanted something permanent to commemorate the day.  Guests enjoyed afternoon tea with residents and shared stories about their wartime memories after the ceremony.

Wendy Harvey, home manager at Davers Court, said: “We are honoured that the Mayor and members of the armed forces were able to join us to commemorate this important day.

“This time of year is significant for many of our residents who lived through wars, and whilst we took the opportunity to look back on the lives that were lost, it was also a lovely opportunity for the residents to reminisce about their childhoods and happier memories.

“We are thankful to everyone who helped us bring this project to life, including Councillor Beckwith, and we are proud that it will serve as a permanent tribute here at Davers Court.”
