Worcestershire couple celebrate platinum anniversary

Home news

Brook Court put on a sparkling celebration for a couple celebrating their platinum wedding anniversary.

Edna Morris and her husband Tom, who married in 1946 at Weoley Castle in Birmingham, were joined by family, friends and the Care UK team as they celebrated at Brook Court care home on Oldnall Road.

The day of celebrations included a homemade cake prepared by head chef, David Burfoot, and a lovely cup of tea.

Edna, aged 90, met Tom, aged 93, in 1941 at the grocers Singletons in Selly Oak where they both worked. Tom then served in the Royal Navy for four years during World War II, before moving to Hertfordshire to work as a farmer. They returned to the Midlands in 1964 and set up their own grocer’s business in the Black Country town of Old Hill. Both Tom and Edna share a passion for ballroom dancing, a hobby they continued into their 80s.

The couple continued to live together until 2014 when Edna’s health deteriorated and she moved into Brook Court. Tom moved into Perry Manor care home in Worcester in the same year.

Joanne Gill, home manager at Brook Court, said: “We like to make all our residents feel at home by keeping to any traditions they have and taking the time to celebrate special occasions such as anniversaries. We simply couldn’t miss the opportunity to raise a glass to Edna and Tom. Tom visits every Sunday, and it is a pleasure to see a couple that are so close after 70 years.

“Everyone had such a fantastic time, and it was an honour to celebrate this impressive milestone with the couple.”
