Appleby House was one of thousands of care homes across the UK to take part in the annual initiative aimed at challenging perceptions of care homes, connecting residents with people in their community, and developing relationships across the generations.
Residents and the team at Appleby House welcomed special guests, Epsom and Ewell Mayor, Cllr Liz Frost, for the day’s festivities, as well as pupils from Blenheim high school and members of the National Citizen Service (NCS).
Appleby House organised a world cuisine party to celebrate the open day, where the home’s chefs treated guests to a special barbecue and created dishes inspired by cultures from around the world. In keeping with the theme, guests were invited to wear national clothing from different countries.
There was fun for all the family, with a bouncy castle, tombola and plenty of stalls available for visitors to browse in the home’s garden. There was also live musical entertainment from a steel band throughout the afternoon to get everyone in the party spirit.
Shona Bradbury, home manager at Appleby House, said: “Care Home Open Day is about connecting people and enriching the lives of residents by building lasting relationships, so we were delighted to welcome so many members of the local community and our special guest, Cllr Liz Frost.
“Both the residents and guests loved the live entertainment throughout the day, and everyone commented how much they enjoyed the celebration. We’d like to thank all of the volunteers from Blenheim high school and the National Citizen Service who helped make it such a special day, and we look forward to welcoming the people of Epsom for future events.”
