Close-knit community lend a hand at Cavell Court

Cavell Court was joined by the Norwich All Saints Women’s Institute when they shared their knitted creations with residents.

Residents at Cavell Court were treated to the visit from the women’s organisation when they donated sensory bands or ‘twiddlemuffs’ to support residents living with dementia.

A sensory band is a pocket or glove that has attachments added to it for older people to experience tactile stimulation. They can be reassuring and help people living with dementia to feel safe, calm and relaxed.

The bands donated by the WI were knitted in a variety of colours with different patterns and textures. They are also adorned with pom poms, buttons, toggles, knitted flowers, bells that tinkle, zippers, and ribbons inside and out to create a tactile experience for the residents.

Samantha Woods, customer relations manager at Cavell Court, said: “We’re thrilled that the Norwich All Saints WI took the time to knit the residents these sensory bands. The bands have proven benefits for older people, especially those living with dementia, as they help to calm and distract if an older person is feeling anxious – they’ll be a welcome addition to the home.

“We’re always looking to work with the local community, so we hope that we can partner with the WI for future projects in the coming months.”

Emily Players from Norwich All Saints WI added: “We’re delighted that the sensory bands were so well received by the residents at Cavell Court. We really enjoyed knitting them and hope that they will bring much joy to the residents that use them.”
