Mildenhall Lodge couple share secrets to a long and happy marriage

Home news

A couple at Mildenhall Lodge have shared their pearls of wisdom in celebration of the royal platinum wedding anniversary.

Iris and Sidney Grimes, aged 94 and 96, have been featured in a commemorative video in which they talk about their own love story, to mark the Queen and Prince Phillip’s marriage milestone.

The Mildenhall couple met aged 15 and 17 and married on 1st August 1994. Iris recalls their special day, commenting that: “I borrowed someone else’s dress as we couldn’t afford much.” Sydney added that the secret to a long and happy marriage is buying his wife flowers every week, “we’re now in our 90’s and we’re still very much in love – Iris still gets her weekly flowers!”

Created by Care UK, the video includes residents from care homes across the country reminiscing about loved ones both past and present. From sharing their first dates to the moment they walked down the aisle, the selection of memories and stories have been captured to celebrate companionship and the some of the country’s great love stories.

Katy Hughes, home manager at Mildenhall Lodge, said: “We were delighted when Iris and Sidney were asked to feature in this commemorative video as they, along with many residents here at the home, often speak fondly about how they met their other halves, their wedding day and their children – and it’s always so lovely to hear.

“We regularly celebrate big anniversaries here at Mildenhall Lodge and understand the importance of maintaining relationships and celebrating life’s milestones.

“Celebrating the occasion has been a really valuable reminiscence activity for residents – particularly those living with dementia. It’s been great for residents to share their life experiences and memories of their loved ones.”
