Eddie the Eagle soars for Sandfields and the Alzheimer Society

Home news

Residents at Sandfields received a special visit from an iconic former British skier for Sports Relief day.

The team at Sandfields organised an all-day ride-a-thon to raise awareness and funds for the Alzheimer Society and invited Eddie the Eagle to join them on Friday morning.

Alongside the team and residents, Eddie the Eagle jumped on the electric bike and cycled for a few miles to support the Alzheimer Society. Children from local nursery Little Pips were also on hand to cheer the ride-a-thon participants.

After hopping off the bike, Eddie spent time chatting to the residents and children from the nursery, as well as resident’s families.  Everyone enjoyed reminiscing with him about his skiing days and the film made about his Olympic achievement.

Deanna Lane, home manager at Sandfields, said: “Helping people living with dementia to lead an active and independent life and support their families is something very important to us, and the Alzheimer Society shares these values with us, so it was fantastic to support the charity with a day of fundraising and celebrate Sports Relief.”

“I am thrilled that Eddie the Eagle was able to join us on the day. His enthusiasm was very contagious and his talk definitely inspired our residents and team members.”

“Here at Sandfields, activity based care is incredibly important and it was wonderful to see so many residents taking part in our all-day ride-a-thon to the applause of the nursery children. I know the team wouldn’t have done as well as they did without the nursery children there to cheer them on.”
