The decision to adopt the baby guinea pigs was the wish of residents at Appleby House, many of whom have a lifelong passion for animals.
When the care home asked residents and their families what they thought of the plans for the new pets, the answer was a resounding ‘yes please’, and there was a unanimous decision to name the new arrivals Bubble and Squeak.
Bubble and Squeak are already firm favourites at the home, and have even made an appearance during the home’s intergenerational activities with local mothers and toddlers.
Home manager at Appleby House, Shona Bradbury, said: “Our new animal additions have brought a smile to everyone’s face, and have melted the hearts of the residents and team members! We are always looking to plan interesting and exciting activities for residents. As so many residents have enjoyed previous animal visits, we were delighted to welcome our own pets to the home and make the residents’ wish become a reality.
“Many residents at Appleby House are living with dementia, and caring for a furry companion can bring a tremendous sense of purpose to their everyday lives. Bubble and Squeak have been so well received, and it’s lovely to see residents participating in the care of the guinea pigs – which provides real therapeutic benefits for them.”
