Pear Tree Court resident knits over 70 poppies for Remembrance Day

Home news

Pear Tree Court nifty knitter has created over 70 poppies for a local church ahead of Remembrance Day.

Phyllis Restall, a resident at Care UK’s Pear Tree Court and a keen knitter, decided to step up to the challenge after seeing a call out for 7,000 poppies for the Remembrance centenary at her local church.

Gathering a small team of volunteers, Phyllis knitted 77 poppies, which will be displayed during the Sacred Heart Church’s Remembrance Day celebration in Waterlooville.

Ray Arnold, home manager at Pear Tree Court, said: “Phyllis is an important part of life here at Pear Tree Court: she always takes part in the activities at the home, and she even helps our reception team on Wednesdays! The team has been blown away by her talent and we are very proud of her creations. We look forward to seeing her poppies displayed at the Sacred Heart Church on their Remembrance Day celebration.

“Arts and crafts and other creative projects can have many therapeutic benefits for older people, especially for those living with dementia, by keeping their minds busy and giving them a sense of purpose. This time of year is especially significant for many of the residents, as many of them lived through the Second World War. Knitting poppies was a fantastic way for Phyllis to take part in the Remembrance Day activities, and also reminded her of happy memories from her younger years when her grandmother taught her how to knit.”
