Back to the drawing board – Knebworth residents set to celebrate the arts

Home news

Residents at a care home in Knebworth have their pencils at the ready ahead of The 2019 Big Draw Festival.

Preparations are underway as Care UK’s Knebworth, on London Road, gears up to join the world’s largest drawing festival this October.

Residents and team members will be taking part in a variety of creative activities to showcase their artistic skills, including a visit from local artist, Marilyn Comparetto, from Art @ MG.

The home has also invited children from Knebworth School to join them for the occasion, where pupils and residents will work together to create a canvas inspired by the Second World War.

Launched in 2000 as part of the ‘Campaign for Drawing’, The Big Draw promotes drawing as a tool for learning, expression and invention, and has encouraged over four million people to get arty since its inception. This year’s theme, ‘drawn to life’, celebrates the benefits of creative activities, especially drawing, on health and wellbeing. 2019 also marks the bicentenary of John Ruskin’s birth, founder of the Guild of St George, the charitable education trust behind the initiative.

Vera Moreira-Henocq, home manager at Knebworth, explained why creative activities are important for residents: “Arts are already a vital part of life here at Knebworth, so we’re very excited to be taking part in such a famous drawing festival.

“Many residents have a keen interest in creative activities, and The Big Draw Festival provides us with the perfect opportunity to invite Knebworth School to the home so we can all learn from each other and share drawing tips.

“It is set to be a lovely afternoon of drawing, and everyone at the home is counting down the days to our arty event.”

Knebworth has been designed to deliver the very best standards of care and to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives. The home provides full-time residential, nursing and specialist dementia care, as well as short-term respite.
