Colchester care home makes the finals in Essex Care Sector Awards

A care home in Colchester is celebrating after being shortlisted in the Essex Care Sector Awards. Care UK’s Tall Trees, on Mile End Road, has made it to the final stage in the ‘Person Centred Dementia Care’ category of the awards, which recognise those delivering quality care services in Essex.

The regional awards celebrate excellence and shine a light on the work that individuals and care providers undertake. The team at Tall Trees has been recognised for their commitment to ensuring residents living with dementia are supported to lead active and fulfilling lives. Led by home manager, Alice Banda, and dementia champion, Jackie Sage, the entire team has undergone several different training programmes to further their knowledge and maintain a high standard of dementia care.

Several changes have been implemented within the home to create stimulating environments for those living with dementia. Each bedroom door has been painted a different colour to help residents differentiate between rooms, and meaningful occupation points have been added around the home, such as dementia dolls and children’s sensory toys.

Encouraging residents to maintain their independence, the home adopts a resident-led approach, supporting people to make their own decisions, from how they’d like to spend their day, right through to how they want the home to be decorated. A dot-voting system is also used to simplify choice making.

Mealtimes are also a vital part of person-centred care within the home. A wide choice of food and drink options are offered, and meals are tailored to people’s needs. One resident, who spends a lot of time walking, is provided with finger food so that she can eat and walk at the same time, which has improved her nutritional levels and overall food intake.

Alice Banda, home manager at Tall Trees, said: “We are thrilled to have been shortlisted in the ‘Person Centred Dementia Care’ category for this year’s Essex Care Sector Awards.

“Here at Tall Trees, we are very proud of the wonderful environment we have created, and strive to ensure that residents continue to live enjoyable, fulfilled lives.

“I’d like to thank all of the team for their hard work, which I know is greatly appreciated by residents and their families. We’d like to wish good luck to everyone who has made the finals - we’re looking forward to the awards ceremony and have our fingers crossed!”

Tall Trees is a modern care home which provides full-time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care. Designed to enable residents to live enjoyable and fulfilling lives, the care home has its very own activity areas and hair salon, and there is plenty of space, both indoors and out, for relaxation and recreation.
