Sevenoaks care home residents set their eyes on the skies

Home news

Sevenoaks care home residents set their eyes on the skiesResidents at a care home in Sevenoaks celebrated Britain’s best birds as part of the world’s largest garden wildlife survey – and it was a flying success!

This year’s RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch inspired activities saw residents at Care UK’s Weald Heights care home, on Bourchier Close, celebrate the best of British birds with some exciting avian-themed activities.

As part of the celebrations, residents were joined by Lady Boswell’s C of E Primary School for a day of bird-themed activities, including making fat balls to encourage more birds into the garden and a nature-themed arts and crafts session.

Residents were also treated to a trip to Sevenoaks Wildlife Reserve, where they spotted local birds and enjoyed a cuppa and cake in the café.

Team members and residents also recorded the number of birds and other wildlife species that visited the care home’s garden – data which will be used by the RSPB to monitor trends and understand how different species are doing.

Maria Covington, home manager at Weald Heights, said: “Residents love taking part in nature-themed activities here at Weald Heights, and we had a lot of fun celebrating this year’s bird-themed event. Especially getting out and about in the fresh air at Sevenoaks Wildlife Reserve.

“Connecting with nature is extremely beneficial for older people, especially those living with dementia, as it promotes positive social interaction, can improve wellbeing and provides an opportunity for sensory stimulation. I’d like to say thank you to Lady Boswell’s School for joining us and making the day so special.”
