‘Lost and hound’ – Stroud care home seeks dachshunds to surprise resident

Home news

A local care home is reaching out to the community to find dachshund owners, in the hope of making one resident’s wish to see the beloved breed come true.

Care UK’s Scarlet House, on Westward Road, is asking local people if they have a friendly dachshund to visit the home and surprise 96-year-old resident, Laurice Clark, after the home discovered she won second place at Crufts with her own dog in 1971. The team had the pawsome idea to reunite her with the beloved breed, and now the search is well underway.

This has all been made possible because of the home’s ‘Wishing Tree’ initiative, which encourages residents to put wishes forward, allowing them to reconnect with a past hobby or try something completely new – from flying on a plane to enjoying a fish and chip supper, no wish is too big or small.

Kate Stevens, home manager at Scarlet House, said: “When the team discovered Laurice’s amazing achievement we decided to find as many dachshunds as possible to visit her.

“Helping residents to lead fulfilled lives is at the heart of everything we do here at Scarlet House, so when we saw Laurice’s wish, we just had to make it come true.

“The team are looking forward to working with the local community to find as many dogs as we can to take Laurice back to her magical time at Crufts.”

Scarlet House is a state-of-the-art care home and provides full-time residential, nursing, dementia care, as well as short-term respite care. The care home, which features 86 ensuite bedrooms, has been designed to enable its residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence. The care home incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities, and includes its own cinema, hair salon and café.
