Residents at a Southmead care home marked LGBT History Month by creating a special piece of artwork.
Care UK’s Trymview Hall, on Southmead Road, hosted an array of reminiscence activities and talks to celebrate LGBT History Month.
Throughout the month, residents learnt all about LGBT history and the famous figures within the community, including celebrities and major activists such as Josephine Baker and Marsha P. Johnson. The team hosted a number of reminiscence sessions, inviting residents to talk about their friends in the community and the way perceptions and laws have evolved over the past five decades.
At the end of the month, residents all worked together to create an artwork to represent their thoughts.
Toni Thompson, a resident at Trymview Hall, said: “Growing up, when things were going on in the LGBT+ community I didn’t know about it – I didn’t really know anyone in the LGBT+ community until I was 18 and I went to college. It doesn’t make any difference to me what people do with their lives, I don’t feel any different, everyone should be treated the same and be equal and happy.”
Robert Mountford, 74, added: ““So much has changed! I think people feel a lot freer and I appreciate that there is a huge spectrum of people out there. It was an interesting topic for discussion and a great conversation. I really enjoyed it!”
Lifestyle Coordinator at Trymview Hall, Jasmin Sadler-Ladell, who organised the activity, said: “Here at Trymview Hall, we are committed to promoting an open, welcoming environment and an equality of opportunity for all, from residents and team members to job applicants and visitors, so we were delighted to celebrate LGBT History Month.
“To say things have changed for people within the community is an understatement – and speaking to residents really put this into perspective. The sessions we hosted proved really popular and gave them a wonderful opportunity to reminisce and use their creative skills as part of the artwork project. We’re all looking forward to getting involved in Pride month next!”
Trymview Hall provides full-time residential and dementia care, with 66 ensuite bedrooms, and has been designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence. The care home will incorporate space for hobby and leisure activities and will include its own cinema, hairdressing salon and café.
