A cut above the rest – Leamington Spa care home team member gives more than 100 haircuts

There is still one hair salon unaffected by current restrictions – and it’s in a Leamington Spa care home.

Maria Cridge, Customer Relations Manager at Care UK’s Priors House, on Old Milverton Lane, and hairdresser extraordinaire, stepped up when hair salons closed in March last year to give residents haircuts throughout lockdown.

Before the pandemic, residents enjoyed regular trims in the home’s very own hair salon, so when visits stopped, Maria, a qualified hairdresser, dusted off her shears and brushes to make sure everyone could keep feeling smart. Over the past year, she has given more than 100 haircuts and pamper sessions, including manicures, to residents at the home.  

Lola, a resident’s relative, said: “Freda has always loved getting her hair and nails done, and she would never go out without looking her best, so it’s lovely to see her blossoming, even in those difficult times.”

Maria Cridge, Customer Relations Manager at Priors House, said: “Through tough times, small, positive things often make a world of difference.

“We all take pride in our appearance; residents are no exception, and hair is big part of it – there’s nothing quite like that ‘post-haircut’ feeling! When our resident hairdresser stopped being able to come in last year due to restrictions, I knew I had to step up and make the most out my hairdressing skills.

“Over the past 12 months, meeting with residents and arranging a haircut and pamper session has become a ritual many look forward to, and it’s great to see them leave the salon with a smile on their face. Needless to say, there has been no cases of bad ‘lockdown haircuts’ here in Priors House!”
