‘Mixing things up’ – Ferndown care home celebrates World Cocktail Day

Home news

A care home in Ferndown marked World Cocktail Day with a special event.

Care UK’s Ferndown Manor, on Golfs Link Road, hosted a cocktail making event to encourage residents to reminisce, socialise and raise a glass to cocktails!

‘Mixing things up’ – Ferndown care home celebrates World Cocktail DayThe home was decorated with balloons and banners and transformed into a bar-like setting. The Ferndown Manor care team donned feather boas and fun sunglasses, and a supply of cocktail shakers was brought in along with a plethora of colourful umbrellas and striped straws.

Martini glasses were chosen to help inspire the cocktails and encourage the residents to remember what they might have enjoyed mixing in the past. As well as making cocktails, residents enjoyed Caribbean themed songs and dancing.

Resident at Ferndown Manor, Janet said: “It was like summer cocktail parties we used to have and we always used to have a cocktail when we were on holiday”. While resident Heather enjoyed the Pina Colada cocktails: “It reminded me of being on a cruise with my husband”.

Jan Cresdee, Home Manager at Ferndown Manor, said: Themed events are always popular at the home and World Cocktail Day gave us a great excuse to come up with something a bit different for the residents and they really threw themselves into the ‘spirit’ of the day!

“Everyone enjoyed the wonderfully decorated cocktails and the chance to dance and sing loudly to reggae tunes. Unfortunately, the sun wasn’t shining outside, but it was on the faces of the partygoers inside.

We had a wonderful time hosting our cocktail making session, and it was great to hear some heart-warming stories from residents – events like these are a wonderful way to encourage reminiscence, which can be really beneficial for older people, especially those living with dementia. We’d like to say a big thank you to residents for sharing their recipes with us as well as a big “Cheers!” I would definitely say a fun time was had by all”.

Ferndown Manor has been designed to deliver the very best standards of care and to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives in a luxury environment. The home provides full-time residential care, nursing care, dementia care and respite care. The care home also boasts its very own cinema and hair salon, and there is also plenty of space, both indoors and out, for relaxation and recreation.
