‘A reyt good time!’ Bracknell care home celebrates Yorkshire Day

Home news

A care home in Bracknell celebrated all things Yorkshire for national Yorkshire Day.

Residents from Bickerton House, on Warfield Road, celebrated everything Yorkshire has to offer, with a ginger beer tasting session, an afternoon Yorkshire tea complete with parkin cake and cupcakes with Yorkshire terrier toppers, and a quiz on famous Yorkshire slang.

Established in 1975 by the Yorkshire Ridings Society, Yorkshire Day celebrates the historic English county of Yorkshire. Since its creation, the annual event has grown in popularity and acts as a day of pride for anyone living in, or originating, from the region.

Bickerton’s ‘King and Queen of Yorkshire’, residents Diane and Francis, were delighted to explore the history of their birth county and celebrate its contributions to British society. Diane, who was born in Hull, said: “Yorkshire has always been nice, people enjoy living there”.

Fellow resident Francis, who has fond memories of walking in the countryside with his friends during his childhood, said: “Yorkshire has a community spirit like no other county. The people are different in Yorkshire; everyone is much closer to each other even if they don’t know one other. It is very friendly.”

Erika Smith, Home Manager at Bickerton House, said: “With two Yorkshire residents here at Bickerton House, we knew we couldn’t let Yorkshire Day pass without celebrating the occasion. This was a fantastic opportunity to hear about Diane and Francis’s childhood and their time spent in Yorkshire, and a chance for all residents to learn more about Yorkshire’s history and explore its famous creations that are still enjoyed today.

“From Yorkshire puddings and liquorice all sorts, to the famous Yorkshire tea, the afternoon’s activities created an opportunity to discover all that Yorkshire has to offer, while offering our resident ‘King and Queen of Yorkshire’, a chance to reminiscence about their childhood and time spent in the Yorkshire dales.”

Bickerton House has been designed to encourage residents to live active and fulfilling lives, while remaining as independent as possible in a safe environment. The state-of-the-art care home, which opened last year, provides full-time residential, nursing and specialist dementia care, and features a bar and café, cinema, hair salon, activities room and garden.
