Chester care home wows national quality inspectors

Home achievement

A Chester care home has been praised by national inspectors for its approach to care and commitment to enable residents to lead fulfilling lives.

The Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) report gave Care UK’s Deewater Grange, on Chester Road, an overall ‘Good’ rating in their first full review since opening, following an unannounced inspection.

The home received ‘Good’ ratings in all five categories, including safety, effectiveness, level of care, responsiveness and having a well-led service.

Inspectors praised Deewater Grange’s holistic, person-centred approach to care. In addition to providing tailored care plans, the home has a ‘resident of the day’ system, which gives each resident an opportunity to share their views on every aspect of life at Deewater Grange, from meals and activities to care and support.

Activities are tailored to residents’ interests and needs too, as highlighted by the report, with a resident commenting: “There is an activities list. You can choose what you want to do, and no one pushes you into anything. There are some really old movies in black and white, there's a crossword and coffee afternoon in the lounge that I've been to. We meet and chat and have a good laugh. We had 'pretend' horse racing last week and the prize was cream cakes.” Another resident added: “I suggested that they set up a library and they did it.”

The team were praised for their kindness and patience, with relatives describing them as ‘very caring’ and local healthcare professionals adding that they were ‘very impressed with the standard of care’. A resident commented: “The staff were very welcoming and caring. Everybody talks to you, everybody is friendly.” Inspectors were also impressed by the positive atmosphere and culture the leadership team helped creating.

The report highlighted Deewater Grange’s dementia-friendly environment, designed to promote independence where possible using technology and equipment such as specialist seating. The purpose-built care home also features dementia-friendly decorations to help residents navigate the home as easily as possible, while its structure – homely lounges in each suite – facilitates the creation of close-knit communities within the home.

Sally Cooper, Home Manager at Deewater Grange, said: “Everyone at Deewater Grange works hard to provide the highest possible standards of care to all residents and their families in a warm, comfortable environment, so I’m proud we received a ‘Good’ CQC rating."

“Every resident is unique – so why should their care plan be any different? We pride ourselves in the high-quality tailored care we provide, enabling residents to lead fulfilling lives in a purpose-built environment that has been designed to promote independence and support those who live at the home."

I would like to say a big thank you to everyone at Deewater Grange for their dedication, which I know is also greatly appreciated by residents and their families. They are what makes our care home a home for so many residents, and I’m grateful for everything they do on a daily basis.

To assess service standards at Deewater Grange, the CQC inspectors spoke with team members and residents, and their relatives following the inspection. They also reviewed the records and procedures already in place at the care home.
