Dancing shoes at the ready – Kidderminster care home hosts its own carnival

Home news

Residents at a Kidderminster care home marched to the beat of their own steel drum for a special celebration.

Care UK’s Brook Court, on Oldnall Road, hosted its very own version of Notting Hill Carnival, complete with masks and live music.

Notting Hill Carnival, Europe’s largest carnival, is an annual celebration of Caribbean culture held in London in late August. In 2021, when the event was cancelled for the second year in a row due to coronavirus restrictions, and team members at Brook Court decided to get busy bringing a taste of the carnival to the home.

In true Notting Hill Carnival style, resident wore brightly coloured masks they created themselves in preparation for the event, and tapped their feet to live entertainment from local entertainer Debbie Miles, who helped everyone get into the party spirit.

Brenda, a resident at Brook Court, said: “I loved every minute of it – fantastic music and lots of dancing. It was just like being at the carnival.”

Gill Pratt, Home Manager at Brook Court said: “Our carnival-themed event was a great success, and we loved hosting our very own street party in the garden."

“It’s a shame to see Notting Hill Carnival being cancelled for the second year in a row, but this inspired us to host our own celebration and bring the carnival to Kidderminster."

“Here at Brook Court, we’re always looking for fun and exciting ways to get residents up and active, and themed events like the Notting Hill Carnival are a great way of doing just that. On top of inspiring everyone to find out more about different cultures, it’s also a fantastic opportunity to get our dancing shoes on and showcase our best moves."

I’d like to say a big thank you to the team, who worked tirelessly to organise a real Notting Hill-style celebration, and to Debbie Miles – her songs helped us make the day extra special.
