‘A Baileys a day keeps the doctor away’ – Frimley resident reveals the secret to a long life on her 100th birthday

Home news

A resident at a care home in Frimley has shared the secret for living a long and happy life on her 100th birthday.

A very special birthday celebration took place at Care UK’s Whitebourne care home, on Burleigh Road, when resident Joyce Carter, turned 100 years ‘young’. To mark the occasion, Joyce revealed her secret to longevity was a ‘Baileys a day’ and ‘being kind’.

To celebrate, the home decorated the lounge with balloons and banners, and the home’s talented head chef baked a special birthday cake for everyone to enjoy.

Joyce was born on 18th November 1921 in Hampstead, London. Throughout her career, Joyce enjoyed a variety of roles, including painting keys on piano keyboards, and working in the countryside, where she once drove a tractor into a ditch – much to her amusement. Passionate about singing and the theatre, Joyce has met renowned showbiz icons, Barbara Windsor and Paul Robeson, and continues to enjoy showbiz life at Whitebourne, where she often enjoys singing and dancing with team members and residents.

Joyce has been married twice and has two sons, Richard and John, who regularly use their mother’s recipes, particularly her lamb stew and strawberry cake, which have remained the family’s favourites.

Francis Bosompin, Home Manager at Whitebourne said: “Joyce is a much-loved resident at Whitebourne, and it was fantastic to help her celebrate this incredible milestone with her friends here at the care home.

“Here at Whitebourne, everything we do is focused around our ethos of ensuring residents live active and fulfilling lives, so we always like to celebrate important milestones – and Joyce’s 100th birthday was no exception. It was lovely to raise a glass together on her special day.”

Whitebourne care home has been designed to provide residential and specialist dementia care, as well as respite, and sensitive end of life care. The home has a hair salon, café and garden, enabling residents to live active and fulfilling lives.
