Let’s get physical – Harrow care home gets fit with the Green Goddess

Home news

A care home in Harrow has taken part in a very special exercise class taught by 1980s fitness star, the Green Goddess.

Residents and team members at Care UK’s Buchanan Court, on Sudbury Hill, donned their workout wear and green accessories to take part in the bespoke virtual session with fitness guru Diana Moran, which forms part of Care UK’s ‘Let’s Get Physical’ initiative.

Diana, known as the Green Goddess, is best known for hosting 'wake up and shape up' on breakfast television while wearing her trademark green leotard in the 1980s.

As part of their activities, residents at Buchanan Court enjoyed a tailored workout class which included a selection of standing and armchair exercises, that have been designed to improve strength, flexibility, and blood circulation.

The ‘Let’s Get Physical’ initiative sees Care UK homes across the country encourage residents to get active by trying something new and exciting – whether that be a fitness class with the Green Goddess, a seated ballet class, disco yoga or even ice skating.

Rohan Mathew, Home Manager at Buchanan Court, said: “We’ve had great fun discovering new ways to get up and active this January to start the new year.

“Here at Buchanan Court, we understand that trying new activities can positively impact resident’s mental and emotional wellbeing, as well as improving their physical health too. Taking part in new and exciting forms of exercise, such as our 80s inspired exercise class presents residents with a new challenge. This can lead to greater self-confidence, which encourages older people to embrace their later years with gusto, retain their independence, and lead fulfilling lives.

“Everyone has really enjoyed taking part so far, and we are already planning our next set of quirky activities.”

Diana Moran, the Green Goddess, added: “I am delighted to support Care UK to encourage residents across the country to get active by trying something new.

“Regardless of age, keeping active is what keeps us young. Whether it’s walking a little further on your everyday stroll, or exercising a little longer, every day brings a new possibility. Even for those less mobile, chair-based exercises can be just as beneficial. Nothing should get in the way of you being the best version of you!”

Buchanan Court provides full-time residential and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care. Designed to enable its residents to live enjoyable and fulfilling lives, the care home has its very own bar and hair salon, and there is plenty of space both in and outdoors for relaxation and recreation.
