A new neigh-bor! Whitstable care home residents enjoy afternoon with pony duo

Highlighted home news

Residents at a care home in Whitstable have been foaling around with some unusual four-legged guests.

Team members and residents at Harrier Lodge, on Thanet Way, added Bella and Bertie, two Shetland ponies to its guest list for an afternoon of animal therapy. Residents enjoyed learning about the history of Shetland ponies, what their preferred food and environment is, while enjoying cuddles and walks around the home’s lounge and garden with their new four-legged friends.

Commenting on Bella and Bertie, resident Monica, said: “I could not believe they were actually here at Harrier Lodge! I love ponies and would love to go for a ride on one of them next time”.

Diane Collins, Home Manager at Harrier Lodge, said: “Here at Harrier Lodge, we are always looking to host fun and creative activities that offer residents a memorable experience. It was wonderful to see the smiles on residents’ faces as the Bella and Bertie strutted their way into the home.

“Being in the company of animals has proven therapeutic benefits for older people, particularly for those living with dementia, as it can reduce anxiety, release calming endorphins, and decrease feelings of loneliness. You could see from the residents' reactions just how engaged they were when given the opportunity to be in the company of Bella and Bertie.

“We look forward to welcoming more animals of all shapes and sizes in the future as they certainly bring a lot of joy and comfort to everyone’s hearts at Harrier Lodge.”

Harrier Lodge is a purpose-built care home which has been designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence. The home provides full-time residential, nursing and specialist dementia care for up to 65 older people in Whitstable, and incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities, including its own cinema, hairdressing salon and café.
