Local care homes invite Southampton residents to understand dementia

Home news

Two local care homes are inviting the community to a free, virtual event for families caring for loved ones living with dementia.

On 30th March, from 2pm-3.30pm, the Care UK team at Ancasta Grove, on Barnes Lane, and Pear Tree Court, on Portsmouth Road, will be hosting a virtual Understanding Dementia event.

Dementia specialist, Dr Nori Graham, who is the Vice President of the Alzheimer’s Society and has extensive experience in healthcare for older people, will be covering a number of topics to help people understand what it is like to live with dementia. There will also be support and practical advice on what dementia is and how memories are lost, as well as useful tips on how to overcome communication barriers and discover positive approaches to living with the condition.

Home Manager at Pear Tree Court, Nicola Richards, said: “There are currently 900,000 people living with dementia in the UK – and this is projected to rise to 1.6 million by 2040*. We realise that many families will also be affected too, so our event will offer professional expertise and insight to those in need, as well as a forum for sharing experiences.

“It can be challenging to look after a friend or relative living with dementia, and we want people to know they’re not alone, and we’re here to offer support. This event has proven popular in the past and we’re looking forward to welcoming local people virtually for an inspiring afternoon of information and guidance.”

For anyone unsure about how to take part in the virtual event, help is at hand. The team at Ancasta Grove and Pear Tree Court will host the event using Microsoft Teams, which is very easy to use.

Simply call or email Customer Relations Managers, Christopher Roby or Kate Slade and they will send a link to join the event and share their top tips to make the most out of the session.

Ancasta Grove and Pear Tree Court have been designed to deliver the very best standards of care and to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives. The homes provide residential, nursing and specialist dementia care, as well as respite and end of life care. The homes have plenty of space both indoors and out, for relaxation and recreation.
