Quorn care home hosts paw-some dog show

Highlighted home news

A care home in Quorn has announced the winners of its barking mad competition.

Care UK’s Lonsdale Mews, on Farley Way, hosted its very own edition of Crufts.

As part of the contest, locals were invited to showcase their dogs’ skills and good looks in one or more of the three possible categories: “Best trick”, “Funniest Character” and “Dog walk”.

19 im-paw-sibly adorable dogs showcased their skills and tricks throughout the afternoon, with three dogs taking the crown. The worthy winners – Reggie the Husky, Bernie the Griffon Nivernais and Hattie the Bishon Frise – were picked by a jury of residents and Phoebe, the home’s canine ‘Head of Happiness’, and received doggy hampers filled with treats, toys and blankets.

The proceeds of the event have also gone to Dogs Trust Loughborough.

Maureen, a resident at Lonsdale Mews and judge on the day, said: “I loved my Dalmatians which I had in my life for 14 years.  I loved the event, it was so nice to see so many well behaved dogs and being asked to be a judge.” Pat, who owned 13 dogs in her lifetime, added: “When I knew that Lonsdale Mews was holding its own dog show, I was delighted and excited. To be surrounded by lovely, well-behaved dogs is my idea of heaven, and it meant the world to me to spend the afternoon with them and their owners.”

Toby Sturgess, Home Manager at Lonsdale Mews, said: “We’re pleased to say our first-ever dog show was a resounding success; we loved seeing so many wonderful dogs strutting into our home – they made it hard to pick a winner.

“We know just how beneficial animal therapy can be for older people, especially for those living with dementia, as being close to animals can help lift a person’s mood and stimulate social interaction. Many residents used to have dogs in their younger years, so they were thrilled to have the opportunity to be part of our judging panel and to meet so many adorable pooches.

“Congratulations to our winners – who knows, our dog show might become a yearly occurrence!”

Lonsdale Mews offers full-time residential and dementia care, as well as short-term respite. The home incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities and includes its own cinema, hairdressing salon and café. The layout of the building is configured into a series of individual suites, each having a dedicated lounge/dining room to help facilitate the creation of close-knit communities.
