Church Crookham care home residents celebrate Diwali

Highlighted home news

Residents at a care home in Church Crookham marked the festival of light, Diwali, with an afternoon celebrating Hindu culture.

Residents at Care UK’s Bourley Grange, on Bourley Road, celebrated the festival with an Indian inspired lunch and a special performance from a Nepalese cultural dance group.

As part of the celebrations, team members dressed in traditional Punjabi clothes and the group, who included team members, performed a Nepalese inspired dance routine for the residents to enjoy.

Keen to dress for the occasion, residents tried on traditional Punjabi scarves and learned more about the history of the festival while enjoying traditional Indian cuisine prepared by the Home’s Head Chef, which included a resident favourite – Momos (Nepalese dumpling).

Commenting on the event, resident Janie said: “It was spectacularly done. Thank you to all the team for organising and displaying their culture to all of us.”

Racquel Merdegia, General Manager at Bourley Grange, said: “The team enjoyed dressing in traditional Punjabi scarves and organising the Nepalese cultural dance group to entertain the residents to celebrate Diwali.

“At Bourley Grange, we're dedicated to making sure the home is a welcoming and friendly environment for everyone, where various cultures and hobbies are regularly honoured through enjoyable activities that promote positive wellbeing.

“Everyone had a great time celebrating Diwali and learning more about when the festival began. We are already looking forward to next year’s celebrations!”

Designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence, Bourley Grange, which remains open to potential residents, incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities. The home provides full-time residential, nursing and memory care in addition to respite care. The layout of the building is configured into a series of individual suites, each having a dedicated lounge/dining room to help facilitate the creation of close-knit communities.
