Hailsham care home residents share pearls of wisdom with community

Home news

Residents at a care home in Hailsham have been passing on their advice to the younger generation as part of a nationwide initiative.

Residents at Care UK’s Bowes House, in Hailsham have been sharing advice as part of a new intergenerational project – Wisdom Booths.

The Wisdom Booths initiative sees Care UK homes across the UK share their advice with younger generations after a national survey found 88% of people nationwide are grateful for what they’ve been told by their elders and 56% will always rely on them for advice, regardless of how old they are.

76-year-old John Revington from Bowes House, on Battle Road, was a former fireman. So, when the home invited East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, John was able to share his advice from his 25 years in the service with the current crews.

The team discussed the differences between technology now and then and what’s evolved since John’s time. John said: “It was great to meet the crew that came, we discussed among ourselves the mutual acquaintances and reminisced about our days in the service.”

Karen Milligan, Senior Customer Relations Manager at Bowes House, said: “We had a great time taking part in Wisdom Booths – the initiative gave us a wonderful opportunity to put our creativity to the test by creating our own Wisdom Booth area and hearing John’s words of wisdom on fire safety was incredibly insightful.

“It has been wonderful to see residents and the fire service spending time together and we’ve all loved hearing everyone’s words of wisdom. We’d like to say a huge thank you to East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service for visiting.”
