Bon appetite – Ipswich care home shortlisted for top catering award

Home news

A care home in Ipswich is celebrating after making the shortlist at a national award ceremony.

Care UK’s Prince George House, on Mansbrook Boulevard, has been shortlisted in the Public Sector Catering Awards in the Unsung Hero category. Leading the nomination is Caroline Lloyd, the home’s Head Chef.

The Public Sector Catering Awards recognises those working in and associated with catering in the UK care sector.

Caroline, who joined the home in 2013, has been praised for ensuring that residents dine with dignity, have plenty of choice, and are served great food that looks, tastes and is of the same standard as fine dining.

As part of its dining experience, the home regularly hosts themed meals and events which are chosen by the residents. This has included a Valentine’s Day themed party complete with a three-course gourmet meal and beautifully decorated cake to celebrate the couples at Prince George House and their spouses.

An advocate for nutritionally-balanced, delicious meals, Caroline ensures residents are fuelling their body with the correct amount of calories – particularly for those living with dementia, who may struggle maintaining their weight. Under Caroline’s careful direction, and working closely with the care and nursing teams, the catering team put together an action plan to support residents. This could include whipping up a nutritious smoothie, and using full-fat milk for example.

Commenting on the shortlisting, Caroline said: “Whether we’re creating appetising dishes, or baking cakes for residents to enjoy with a cup of tea, we strive to make a positive impact on residents’ health and wellbeing through nutrition and hydration.

“I’m over the moon to be shortlisted for this award – I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a win!”

Magda Kurdziel, Home Manager at Prince George House, added: “We’re delighted to have been shortlisted in the Unsung Hero category at this year’s Public Sector Catering Awards. Caroline and the wider catering team work incredibly hard to ensure that mealtimes are enjoyable, and that there is always a variety of tasty and nutritious meals on offer each day.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to Caroline, and the whole catering team at Prince George House. I’m so proud of what we achieve every day, and it’s fantastic that everyone’s hard work has been recognised nationally.”
