An Epsom care home is opening its doors to the community to mark 80 years since the end of World War II.
On Thursday 8th May, from 2pm-4.30pm, Care UK’s Appleby House, on Longmead Road, is welcoming local people to honour the 80th anniversary of VE Day with its very own 1940s-themed celebration.
VE Day was celebrated on 8th May 1945, after Prime Minister Winston Churchill made an announcement on the radio that the war in Europe had come to an end. This emotional news sparked celebrations across the country, with many taking to the streets for spontaneous parties.
At Appleby House, the team has been hard at work organising their own special commemorative event, which will see residents and guests enjoy an afternoon of delicious food, entertainment and dancing as they embrace the spirit of the 1940s.
Team members and residents will turn back the clock as they dress in 1940s themed attire, while vintage singer Amy Putt will get everyone’s toes tapping with songs from the wartime era. Traditional buffet-style refreshments, including finger foods, Victoria sponge cake and tea and coffee, will also be available for guests to indulge in.
Resident Peter Dovey, 92, said “It’s important for children who didn’t experience war to remember the people who fought and died to maintain freedom in Europe. At our age, we remember losing friends and family during the war.
“I remember celebrating VE on the village green in Kemsing Village, Sevenoaks, where there was a marquee and bunting. We still had ration books, so it was important people in the village agreed what they were going to bring to the street party.”
Shona Bradbury, Home Manager at Appleby House, added: “We’re always grateful for an opportunity to strengthen our relationships with the community, so we’re looking forward to welcoming people for a special event marking the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
“This is an incredibly important milestone for many residents, and we’re keen to honour all those involved. Music is a fantastic way to bring back memories for older people and a wonderful way to bring communities together, so we’re thrilled to welcome Amy Putt to get everyone’s toes tapping.
“We’re looking forward to welcoming new and old faces into Appleby House as we mark such a significant moment in history. And remember, vintage clothing on the day is encouraged!”
Designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence, Appleby House incorporates plenty of space for leisure activities and hobbies – offering its own allotment, shop, hair salon and art studio. The home provides full-time dementia care and respite care, as well as a day centre.
