Colchester care homes invite community to honour VE Day

Two Colchester care homes are opening their doors to the community to mark 80 years since the end of World War II.

On Thursday 8th May, Care UK’s Silversprings, on Tenpenny Hill, and Tall Trees, on Oaks Place, are welcoming local people to honour the 80th anniversary of VE Day with its very own 1940s-themed street party.

VE Day was celebrated on 8th May 1945, after Prime Minister Winston Churchill made an announcement on the radio that the war in Europe had come to an end. This emotional news sparked celebrations across the country, with many taking to the streets for spontaneous parties.

At Silversprings, the team has been hard at work organising their special commemorative event, which will take place from 2.30pm–5pm. Residents and guests are invited to wear 1940s attire to embrace the spirit of a traditional street party. The event will also feature a sing-along with local performer Pete George, along with delicious refreshments prepared by Silversprings’ talented chef.

Over at Tall Trees, from 12 noon-3pm, visitors can join residents for an afternoon of celebrations, including live music from local performer Gwyn Pritchard, a 1940s themed lunch menu and a visit from the Royal British Legion and local cadets.

Earlier in the week, on Tuesday 5th May, Tall Trees residents and their relatives will enjoy a talk by a Heritage Tour representative, and on Wednesday 6th May, the home’s regular friendship café will be open to the community from 2pm-4pm and will receive a 1940s makeover, with team members wearing traditional attire from the era in honour of VE Day.

Silversprings resident, Geoff Gant, 87, said "I remember the parties we had as a little boy and how much I enjoyed them! I think it is important to remember and celebrate VE day as it was a major event. We are looking forward to the party here at Silversprings with family, friends and the community."

Joanne Rix, Home Manager at Silversprings, said: “Here at Silversprings, we’re always grateful for an opportunity to strengthen our relationships with the community, so we’re looking forward to welcoming people to our lively street party, marking the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

“This is an incredibly important milestone for many residents, and we’re keen to honour all those involved. Music is a fantastic way to bring back memories for older people and a wonderful way to bring communities together, so we’re thrilled to welcome Pete George to get everyone’s toes tapping.”

Alice Banda, Home Manager at Tall Trees, said: “This milestone holds great significance for many of our residents, and we are eager to honour all those who were involved.

“Reminiscence activities are a great way for older people, and those living with dementia, to connect with those around them and help maintain a sense of identity. In the run up to the day, residents have been sharing their own stories and memories – it’s been fantastic to hear everyone’s experiences and learn from one another.”

“We have a week of exciting activities planned for residents and the community, and we’re looking forward to welcoming new and old faces into Tall Trees as we mark such a significant moment in history.”

Silversprings and Tall Trees are state-of-the-art care homes, designed to deliver the very best standards of care and to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives. The homes offer a range of services, including residential, nursing, dementia and short-term respite care.
