Three care homes around Harrow are opening their doors to the community to mark 80 years since the end of World War II.
On Thursday 8th May, Care UK’s Buchanan Court, in Harrow, Whitby Dene, in Eastcote, and Woodland Hall, in Stanmore, are welcoming local people to honour the 80th anniversary of VE Day with their very own 1940s-themed celebrations.
VE Day was celebrated on 8th May 1945, after Prime Minister Winston Churchill made an announcement on the radio that the war in Europe had come to an end. This emotional news sparked celebrations across the country, with many taking to the streets for spontaneous parties.
The teams at all three homes have been hard at work organising their own special commemorative events. From 10am-4.30pm, the local community is invited to embrace the spirit of the 1940s at Buchanan Court with a special VIP guest – Councillor Salim Chowdhury, the Mayor of Harrow.
Over at Whitby Dene, from 11am, guests can expect live entertainment from Bus Pass to Broadway, followed by a sing-along of well-known Cockney songs.
Meanwhile, visitors at Woodland Hall can enjoy an array of delicious foods and 1940s-themed entertainment from 11am. There will be live music and a traditional afternoon tea on offer throughout the afternoon, before the day ends with a 1940s quiz at 4pm.
Esther Adams, Home Manager at Buchanan Court, said: “We’re thrilled to be opening our doors to the community to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
“The event is a chance to re-awaken old memories and offers a meaningful way for older people, and those living with dementia, to connect with others and celebrate a momentous event in our history.”
Salima Baidoo, Home Manager at Whitby Dene, added: “As we approach VE Day, residents have been sharing their cherished stories from wartime Britain – it’s been so inspiring to hear their experiences and learn from one another.
“We’re looking forward to welcoming new and old faces into Whitby Dene for a nostalgic and heartwarming day to remember!”
Buchanan Court, Whitby Dene and Woodland Hall provide full-time residential, dementia and nursing care, as well as short-term respite care. Designed to enable residents to live enjoyable and fulfilling lives, there is plenty of space both indoors and out for relaxation and recreation.
