Cheltenham care home celebrates Armed Forces Day with local cadets

Residents at a care home in Cheltenham welcomed local air cadets in recognition of Armed Forces Day.

Care UK’s Sandfields, on St George’s Road, enjoyed a day of military tradition, camaraderie and shared stories with the 125 (Cheltenham) Squadron.

The celebration began with the cadets performing a practice drill routine in full dress uniform. The drill, which mirrored the marching often seen during national parades such as on Remembrance Sunday, was a moving experience for all in attendance.

After the performance, the cadets and residents gathered in the home’s café and garden for refreshments prepared by the home's Head Chef.

During the day, the cadets shared why they joined the unit, while residents told their own stories and memories from their time in the forces. Many also reflected on the significance of Armed Forces Day and the role the military plays in shaping communities.

93-year-old resident, Anne Pittaway, said: “I felt very proud to see the Air Cadets, they looked so smart in their uniforms. I enjoyed the marching the most and how well timed it was. The Cadets were so friendly, it was lovely to hear them chatting to us about what being a cadet meant to them.

Malaika Charles, Home Manager at Sandfields, said: “It was an absolute pleasure to host the 125 Squadron Air Cadets for Armed Forces Day. The drill performance was a real highlight and the opportunity for our residents to connect with the cadets was truly special.

“We’re grateful to everyone who took part and made the day so memorable. It was a lovely opportunity to celebrate our armed forces while bringing together different generations for meaningful conversations.”

Sandfields is a state-of-the-art care home that provides full-time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care. The care home incorporates plenty of space for leisure activities and hobbies, and includes its own cinema, hair and beauty salon and café.
