Slough care home serves up sunshine and smiles with tennis tournament

Residents at a care home in Slough enjoyed an ace afternoon of serves and strawberries as they took to Centre Court for their very own tennis tournament. 

The garden at Care UK’s Oak House, on Forest Close, was transformed into a mini-Wimbledon, with residents gathered outside to watch the matches while sipping on Pimm’s and tucking into delicious bowls of strawberries and cream. 

There were plenty of laughs as residents and team members took to the lawn to show off their tennis skills in a series of light-hearted matches. 

Resident Margaret Deverill, 91, said: “I enjoyed playing tennis very much, it was great fun. I really do enjoy watching Wimbledon on television. I’d say we have a lot of catching up to do before we’re on any of the courts.”

Agnieszka Klimkowicz-Buda, Home Manager at Oak House, said: “We had a brilliant afternoon hosting our very own tennis tournament.  

“We’re always looking for ways to bring residents and team members together for activities which make everyday moments special – and this was certainly one of those days. It was brilliant to see everyone’s serve and backhand skills too; it all gave us an opportunity to do some light exercise, which can do wonders for older people. 

“The residents loved cheering everyone on, and it was a great way to enjoy the sunshine together. We’re already looking forward to next year!”

Oak House provides residential, nursing and short-term respite care, as well as specialist dementia care. The home, which has its very own café, hair salon and cinema room, enables residents to live active and fulfilled lives while also promoting independence.
