Sway care home to host free dementia advice event

A care home in Sway is inviting the community to learn more about life following a dementia diagnosis.  

On Thursday 24^th July from 2pm-4pm, Care UK’s Sway Place, on Church Lane, is opening its doors for a special event designed to start a conversation about dementia, including debunking some myths about the condition.  

Dementia expert Dr Nori Graham will host an ‘Understanding Dementia’ session, sharing practical advice on what the syndrome is and how memories are affected, as well as tips on overcoming communication barriers and discovering positive approaches to living with the condition.

After the talk, Dr Graham will lead a Q&A session to resolve queries about dementia, how it can affect people as they age and what you can do to support a loved one.

In addition to the event, the Sway community can visit The Big Dementia Conversation online advice hub. The portal includes in-depth conversations with families of people living with dementia and expert advice from Care UK’s specialists to learn how to reduce the risks and symptoms of the condition.

“Dementia remains a very misunderstood condition, which can affect a person’s personality and behaviour quite significantly. It can be overwhelming for families when a loved one is diagnosed, but we’re here to help and to show that people living with dementia can still lead rewarding lives.

“We are looking forward to welcoming people into our home and building a community-wide support network.” 

Designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while promoting independence, Sway Place incorporates plenty of space for leisure activities and hobbies. The layout of the building is configured into a series of individual suites and 14 independent living cottages, with each having a dedicated lounge/dining room to facilitate the creation of close-knit communities. The home provides full-time residential and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care.
