Slough care home residents and team members come together for DIY project

Team members and residents at a care home in Slough have joined forces to make over their outside space.

The community at Oak House, on Forest Close, has been rolling up its sleeves and getting stuck into some hands-on home improvements – all in the name of sharing skills.

As part of Care UK’s ‘Fixer Uppers’ programme, residents, their families and the home’s team renovated the outdoor area, which included painting and brightening the old furniture.

The project has been ongoing since July and was completed on this year’s International Repair Day, with residents celebrating their achievement with members of the local community.

Resident Beryl said: “We can’t believe we’ve made this look like such beautiful brand-new outdoor furniture. It’s wonderful to see people getting involved in even a small project here at the home.”

The Fixer Uppers initiative aims to revive traditional repair skills – such as fixing furniture, mending clothes and tackling small maintenance jobs – and celebrate the invaluable knowledge older generations can pass on while promoting sustainability.

Agnieszka Klimkowicz-Buda, Home Manager at Oak House, said: “Residents have honed their DIY and decorating skills over a lifetime, and the Fixer Uppers project has been a fantastic way for them to make a visible difference in their own community and share practical knowledge in a meaningful way.

“It was wonderful to see everyone fully engaged and residents swapping stories, learning from one another and genuinely enjoying the process.

“We’d like to thank the residents, their families and team members for dedicating their time to give Oak House such a wonderful makeover. It was a brilliant project and we look forward to many more in the future.”

Oak House provides residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care. The home, which has its very own café, hair and beauty salon and cinema room, enables residents to lead active and fulfilled lives while also promoting independence.
