Bromsgrove care home residents team up with youth group for DIY project

A care home in Bromsgrove has joined forces with local Beavers Scouts for International Repair Day.

Residents at Chandler Court, on Recreation Road, have been rolling up their sleeves and getting stuck into some hands-on DIY – all in the name of sharing skills with the next generation.

As part of Care UK’s ‘Fixer Uppers’ programme, residents welcomed local beavers from 12th Worcester Beaver Scouts and 12th Cub Scouts to spruce up their garden. Together, they painted upcycled bird boxes. 

Resident Betty Daplyn said, “I really enjoyed decorating the bird boxes with the children.”

Resident Sheila Oliver added, “I spoke with the children about how people used to upcycle during and after the war, and how important it was back then to save money - to ‘make do and mend’.”

Launched to celebrate International Repair Day, the initiative aims to revive traditional repair skills – such as fixing furniture, mending clothes and tackling small maintenance jobs – and champion the invaluable knowledge older generations can pass on while promoting sustainability.

Rebecca Pearce, Customer Relations Manager at Chandler Court, said: “Residents have honed their DIY skills over a lifetime, and the Fixer Uppers project has been a fantastic way for them to connect with young people and share practical knowledge in a meaningful way.

“It was wonderful to see everyone fully engaged and residents swapping stories, learning from one another and genuinely enjoying the process.

“We’d like to thank the 12th Worcester Beaver Scouts and 12th Cub Scouts for coming to the home to bring life back to our garden. It was a brilliant afternoon and we look forward to many more visits in the future.”
