Birds of prey pay a flying visit to Dursley care home

Residents at a Dursley care home had an “im-peck-able” morning with some beady-eyed friends.

Residents at Care UK’s The Hollies, on Drake Lane, had a cracking time when they welcomed some very special birds of prey from Wren’s Birds of Prey, as part of the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch.

On the day, residents got to meet and hold a host of birds, including Rowan a Tawny Owl. Everyone learned about each bird’s characteristics, their food preferences, and how they hunt their prey in the wild.

Erica a resident at The Hollies, said: “It was lovely to have the birds of prey actually visit us, I particularly enjoyed the Peregrine Falcon and learned that it is the fastest bird, he was beautiful up close.

The special visit was in celebration of the world's largest garden wildlife survey, which helps the RSPB monitor species population and trends. Residents also ventured into the home's garden to observe various local birds, counting the difference species.

Virginia Peachey, Customer Relations Manager at The Hollies, said: “We were delighted to be part of the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch again this year and to be playing our part in this important national survey. We loved welcoming our feathery friends into the home – it was wonderful to see these incredible creatures close up and learn more about them.

“Here at The Hollies, we are always hosting new and exciting activities for residents. Animal therapy has proven to be incredibly beneficial for older people, as it can prompt social interaction and have a calming effect; and this event was perfect for just doing that.

“I’d like to thank the team at Wren’s Birds of Prey for making the day so memorable; we’re already looking forward to their next visit.”

The Hollies is a state-of-the-art care community that provides full-time residential, dementia and nursing care, as well as short-term respite care across two homes: The Hollies and Holly Oak. Both buildings incorporate plenty of space for leisure activities and hobbies and includes their own café, hair and beauty salon and bar.
