Care home celebrates VE Day in style

A care home in Edinburgh has stepped back in time to mark the 81st anniversary of VE Day.

Care UK’s Lauder Lodge in Portobello pulled out all the stops to commemorate the poignant anniversary of the end of the second world war in Europe.

The Wakefield Avenue home was transformed for the occasion, with team members and residents dressing in 1940s attire as they enjoyed a day of reminiscence.

Guests were treated to a special tea party, complete with freshly baked cakes and plenty of fizz, and came together to sing much-loved classics such as vera Lynn - White cliffs of dover and we’ll meet again.

Resident Betty Fisher, said: “It felt like a mini street party in the home. We had a buffet, sing-song and there was such a lovely sense of togetherness. It serves as an important reminder to honour the stories and bravery of wartime veterans.”

Anees Riaz, Home Manager at Lauder Lodge, said: “We had such a special time honouring VE Day.

“Enabling residents, especially veterans who live at the home, to foster meaningful connections and reminisce is an important part of life here. Our VE Day celebrations gave everyone the perfect opportunity to share their memories of times gone by and reflect on the sacrifices made during the war.

“I’d like to thank the team, who worked so hard to make the day special.”

Lauder Lodge is a state-of-the-art care home that provides full-time residential, nursing and dementia care. Designed to enable residents to lead enjoyable and fulfilling lives, it has its own cinema room, pub and hair and beauty salon, and there is plenty of space – both indoors and out – for relaxation and recreation.
