I’ve been managing care homes since 2007 and before that I had a long career in the NHS. I started out as a trainee nurse in 1977 and as my career progressed I moved into management roles.
What I love about being a care home manager is being in a position to make decisions and changes that give residents the comfortable, happy and secure life they deserve. It’s important to me that we recognise the individuality of each resident and provide them with care that is tailored to their precise needs.

I used to be an English teacher but have worked in care since 2006, initially as a carer before working my way up to become a home manager in 2010.
I’ve worked for Care UK before, originally in 2016, and I came back in February 2018. I wanted to work for a big organisation with policies and procedures in place and where new and innovative approaches to care are embraced.
I enjoy every day at work, from the moment I walk through the door and see my colleagues and residents, to when I assist residents at meal times and have the chance to get to know them. The best part is when we are met with a challenge and we pull together as team; we remain calm and work through it and at the end of it we come out stronger.
Originally from the Philippines, I am an experienced nurse and clinical lead. When I moved to the UK I worked for another care home and joined Care UK in 2009.
I thoroughly enjoy working within a modern care home setting and getting to know the residents at Manor Lodge. I enjoy giving residents quality time to really understand their needs.
I think it is so important to offer personalised care to each person and listen to how they feel. I’m looking forward to all the challenges and achievements this job can bring and being a part of the team here.
I already knew someone who worked for Care UK and they highly praised it as being a great place to work, so I began my career in November 2013 with the company.
I believe to be an effective team player at Manor Lodge you must be confident, organised, helpful, positive and of course build a good rapport with the residents, relatives and staff. As I work out the front at reception I really enjoy meeting and talking to so many different people. I really like hearing their stories whilst I make them a coffee and seeing them relax and unwind with their family and friends.
Outside of work I used to be a stage manager with Broadway Theatre in Barking so I like to re-visit there from time to time. I am family orientated so I try to see them as often as I can to enjoy a nice meal and catch up.
I’ve been at Manor Lodge since May 2018 after wanting a change in career.
My biggest career highlight so far has been the seeing the home achieve an Outstanding CQC rating.
Being organised, patient and self-motivated are some of main skills you need to be successful in this role.
I think the best part of my job is being able to interact with residents’ families as I enjoy meeting new people.
After many years as a landlady for my own public house, I decided to use my skills in hospitality in a different environment and joined Care UK in 2010.
As well as experience running a public house, one of which had a 100-seat restaurant, I also have qualifications in team leadership, supervision and hospitality.
My personal goal is to keep developing these skills and pursue another qualification in hospitality. I always make time in my day to talk to residents - just by taking the time to ask how they are can make a big difference to their day, and I enjoy it too!
I started working at Care UK in 2011, having had previous experience working within maintenance and gardening.
To be good in this role you need to be good at fixing things and DIY. I believe my biggest professional challenge in this role has been maintaining and keeping a home of this size up to date.
So far, my biggest career highlight to date has been the award I won for maintenance man of the year in 2014.
When I’m not working, I enjoy going to the cinema, eating out and getting out in my garden.
I began working at Manor Lodge in May 2010. During this time, I’ve enjoyed maintaining the home and working in the grounds to make it more pleasurable for the residents. I’m especially proud that I’ve won the maintenance man of the year award.
I think you need a wide variety of skills and a willingness to learn to be good in this role. Since working here I’ve passed my IOSH training which has helped me to gain more confidence.
My favourite part of my working day is meeting new residents. Outside of work I enjoy fishing and gardening.
I came to Manor Lodge in December 2018 after qualifying as a Canine Relations Manager, having already completed my puppy training.
I decided to work at Care UK because I love being spoiled. To be successful in this role you need to be patient and you must enjoy tummy rubs and ear scratches – so far I’m the proud winner of the GEM award for the cutest member of staff.
The best part of my day is walking around and saying hello to all the residents and having a cheeky snack. The thing I look forward to most is cuddles, cuddles, and more cuddles.
When I’m not at work, there’s nothing I enjoy more than relaxing on the sofa.
