Framlingham WWII veteran honoured with Bletchley Park Commemorative Badge

Home news

World War II veteran Liz Austin from Framlingham had a special postal delivery this week from Prime Minister David Cameron when she received a commemorative badge and certificate for her code-breaking during the war at Bletchley Park.

Now aged 87, Liz Austin was called up to join the war when she was 17 years old on her last day at school and she trained at Bletchley Park, WWII’s iconic code-breaking site in Buckinghamshire, where she learnt how to use the cyphering and encryption machines. She was then based at the Eastcote Outstation in Middlesex where she helped decipher German codes and forward them on to Bletchley Park.

Commenting this week about receiving the long-overdue recognition, she said: “I was amazed and very proud to receive the badge. Working during the war at such a young age was hard, with very long hours, working through the night and lots of secrecy. After some encouragement and persuasion from Care UK colleagues here at Mills Meadow, I decided to tell my story and claim the badge as I would like to pass it onto my grandchildren.”

Liz Austin was born in Framlingham and has spent most of her life in Suffolk. She joined the Wrens during the war from 1943 and then worked as a potter in Sudbury before marrying her husband John and settling in Cretingham. She now lives at Mills Meadow care home on Fore Street in Framlingham and is looking forward to the completion of the redevelopment of the home which is now underway and will provide spacious new rooms with ensuite showers for all residents as well as landscaped gardens and additional facilities such as a small cinema, café and hairdressers.

The first stage of the redevelopment of Mills Meadow opens in August 2014 and when complete in autumn 2015 Mills Meadow will provide nursing and specialist dementia care for up to 60 residents and a new wellbeing centre offering day care and clubs for older people living independently in the community.

The achievements of the Government Code and Cypher School made a significant contribution to allied victory during WWII. In 2009 the government recognised the vital service of all those who worked at Bletchley Park and its outstations during the war, by presenting surviving veterans with a blue and gold commemorative badge.
