Station House Carer Wins Prestigious National Care Award

Life Skills Support Worker Jamie Coppell has been a winner since he first started his job six months ago as far as the residents and staff of Care UK’s Station House in Crewe are concerned. Now his ‘bubbly, lively’ approach to his work has won him first place for the Best Newcomer in the prestigious National Care Awards.

Jamie joined the team in May after doing various jobs including bingo-calling in his home town of Manchester. However it seems that a different career was to be his calling as care home manager Carole Wardle explained: “He is bubbly, lively and has an infectious laugh and he manages to draw the residents out of themselves. You can tell when he is in a room because you can hear the laughter.”

Carole, manager of Station House for the past 10 years, is herself the recent winner of a regional award for her promotion of dignity in care. She added: “All our staff are excellent and have an understanding of care built up over many years but Jamie, who is in his first care position, showed an instinctive rapport with older people.”

Delighted Jamie describes it as ‘quite an honour ‘ to win Best Newcomer Award.

Jamie is proud to be part of the Station House team and clearly enjoys being in the company of the residents as much as they enjoy being in his. He says about his job: “I love working with older people – they are fun, friendly and ready to engage socially. There are so many misconceptions about old age. It doesn’t have to be the end of fun and an active life – it can be the start, especially making new friends.”
