Company news

Catherine Anderson-Mills is manager of Maplestead day club, which opened in April 2012. Here she tells us why she chose a career in caring and what she enjoys most about her work.

Working in care is something that came to me naturally. My mum was a home help and when I was 13, I used to go with her to the places where she worked. I'd make tea and cakes with the older people that she supported, and the experience made me want to make a career out of caring for people too.

Before coming to Maplestead day club, I'd been working in care for around 20 years, with a particular focus on dementia care and caring for people with learning disabilities. In my previous role, I was a full-time activities co-ordinator at a residential care home in Suffolk – I’m never short of ideas for engaging, fun activities that I know people will enjoy!

I'd describe myself as creative and approachable, and I’m really passionate about my job. It's so rewarding to know that we're making a difference to people's lives – a simple smile can mean a lot to me and to the rest of the team too. We all want to let members know that we care about them and that we’ll always support them to keep doing the things that are important in their lives.
