Dr Sarah Bromley, national medical director for offender health services at Care UK, has become a Fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners (FRCGP), one of a small number working in offender health to enjoy the accolade.
Sarah has been a GP for 18 years and in her formative years developed interests in mental health and substance misuse, which included being the clinical lead for mental health at North Bradford Primary Care Trust.
She moved to the Isle of Wight in 2005 for a role at HMP IOW, where she has worked with the team to deliver a number of improvements in healthcare, including improved management of long term conditions and safer prescribing.
In 2010, Sarah was elected to become an executive board member of the local clinical commissioning group, and has led initiatives in developing clinical leadership, an integrated care project for long term conditions (including health, social care and third sector organisations) and mental health.
She joined Care UK in June 2013 as the national medical director for offender health, working with local teams to deliver and improve clinical care in over 20 prisons across the country.
Sarah said: “I was thrilled to be nominated to become a FRCGP and, naturally, delighted to succeed. I regard it as a further step in my professional development and one which will assist me in carrying out my role to the very best of my ability.
“Offender health is a very challenging area both in terms of patient care and the working environment for GPs who can sometimes feel a little isolated in their role. Part of my mission is to ensure GPs working in our services are well supported by improving the connections between GPs and the rest of the prison healthcare team.
“A large part of my job entails travelling around and meeting with other clinicians but I am determined to retain an element of clinical work on the Isle of Wight. I also sit on the Board of the Isle of Wight Clinical Commissioning Group which helps me keep my finger on the pulse of everyday healthcare.”
