West Drayton Care Home Helps Local Community Understand Dementia

Home news

Care UK’s The Burroughs care home took people in West Drayton and surrounding areas on a ‘dementia adventure’ to help them to understand the complex condition.

At the free event, which coincided with Dementia Awareness Week, Neil Mapes from Dementia Adventure joined the team at The Burroughs to share his knowledge and provide practical tips for those caring for loved ones with dementia. Attendees were also able to pick up complimentary copies of Care UK’s recently launched Listen, Talk, Connect guide, which provides guidance on how to communicate and connect with people living with the condition.

Dementia Adventure specialises in connecting people living with dementia and their carers, with nature and a sense of adventure. Neil’s ethos is to focus on what the person can do, rather than what they can’t.

Speaking about the event, Josephine Thomas, home manager at The Burroughs, said: “The event was a huge success and Neil shared fantastic practical advice for the many family carers that attended.

“At Care UK, we understand that being armed with plenty of expert advice and information can make all the difference for those caring for loved ones and by hosting events like this, we can ensure this information is communicated to people in our local community. These events are also an opportunity for visitors to speak directly to professionals in this area, as well as the care team from the home and I hope we can host more events like this in the future.”

Dementia affects 820,000 people in the UK and 25 million people have a close friend or family member living with the condition. Around 75 percent of Care UK’s residents are living with dementia and Care UK is committed to ensuring its residents receive the highest quality care.

Situated on Mill Road, The Burroughs home has been designed to deliver the very best standards of care and to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives.  The home offers a range of services including residential care, specialist dementia care and respite care.

For further information on The Burroughs, please call Josephine Thomas on 01895 221 620 or manager.theburroughs@careuk.com.

Care UK runs 113 care homes nationwide and also provides care for thousands of people living in their own homes.  For more general information, please go to www.careuk.com. For more information on Dementia Adventure go to www.dementiaadventure.co.uk.
