At the free event, Neil Mapes from Dementia Adventure will be joining the team at Hadrian House to share his knowledge and provide practical tips for those caring for someone living with dementia. Neil will be helping people understand the condition as well as giving guidance on how families affected can continue to communicate and connect with their loved ones, echoing Care UK’s recently launched ‘Listen, Talk, Connect’ guide.
After the event, Neil will be on hand to answer any questions and there will be an opportunity for members of the public to meet the carers at Hadrian House.
Dementia Adventure specialises in connecting people living with dementia and carers with adventure. Neil’s ethos is to look at what the person can do, not what they can’t.
Speaking about the event, Rosalyn Walker, home manager at Hadrian House, said: “At Care UK, we understand being armed with plenty of expert advice and information can make all the difference for those caring for loved ones living with dementia. By inviting Dementia Adventure to host this free event in partnership with Care UK, we can ensure this information is communicated clearly and concisely, with visitors having the opportunity to speak directly to the professionals in this area as well as team members from the care home.”
Dementia affects 820,000 people in the UK and 25 million people have a close friend or family member living with the condition. 75 percent of Care UK’s residents are living with various stages of dementia and Care UK offers extensive dementia training programs for all staff members to ensure its residents receive the highest quality care.
Those who attend the Dementia Adventure event at Hadrian House will also be able to pick up a copy of Care UK’s recently published ‘Listen, Talk, Connect’ – a free guide which helps friends and relatives to overcome the challenges they may face in having conversations and general interaction with loved ones living with dementia.
Compiled by professional carers, families affected by dementia, and specialists in the field, ‘Listen, Talk, Connect’ highlights the essential role of regular contact and verbal and non-verbal communication for people living with dementia in order to lead more enjoyable and fulfilling lives.
