Playground safety is child’s play for Care UK

Home news

Pupils at St Matthew’s C of E Primary School on Church Road in Stroud received a boost from its neighbours at Care UK’s Scarlet House care home, when 15 high visibility tabards were donated to a group of year five pupils who make up the school’s playground support team.

Playing an essential part in school life by ensuring break times are safe for all, the playground support team comprises a group of volunteers aged nine and ten.  All pupils go through a training programme before they become a member of the team, ensuring they are fully prepared to support younger children in their games and to facilitate happy play times.

Pyela Mwale, home manager at Scarlet House, said: “Since we first opened our doors, the team at Scarlet House has been focused on establishing links with the local community and getting to know our neighbours better.

“We already have a fantastic relationship with St Matthew’s C of E Primary School and when we became aware of the playground support team and fantastic role it performs we were very keen to lend a helping hand.  The tabards distinguish the members of the playground support team from the other pupils and help to give them a sense of identity.  We understand they are very happy with the donation and we look forward to continuing to work with the school on future projects.

Gina Thomson, head teacher at St Matthew’s C of E Primary School, said: “We were delighted to receive the donation from Care UK and the new high visibility tabards for our year five playground support team allow the pupils to really stand out, so they are easily spotted by the other children during break time.  The team does a great job and the tabards help to give the pupils a sense of importance around their role.

“Providing new equipment creates a lot of excitement among the children and we are all grateful to Pyela and the Care UK team at Scarlet House for their continued support.”
