The Terrace care home wins seal of approval from national care watchdog

Home news

Care UK’s The Terrace care home in Richmond, North Yorkshire has been given the seal of approval by a national care watchdog.

At a visit by the Care Quality Commission in February, examining the home against a number of key areas such as safe, caring, effective, responsive and well-led, inspectors were happy to award the home an overall good rating.

During their visit to the home, which provides specialist care for older people, some of whom have dementia, the inspectors talked informally to the team and examined the home’s administrative systems and processes.

Home Manager Nicola Wilkins said: “I am delighted that we reached the high standard set out by the Government and CQC and I was even more delighted that the inspectors highlighted how the team works to respect people's dignity and independence.”

The inspectors noted that all of the people they spoke with were complimentary about the approach of staff and how they treated people. For example, one person described the staff as, "Lovely people who will help you, every minute of the day." Other comments made by people about staff included, "They are kind, very helpful." And, "Respectful and very helpful." One visitor told us, "The staff are caring and I would not mind moving in myself."

The inspectors also commented that they saw staff explaining what was happening and giving people choices throughout the day. When care tasks were carried out, such as moving and handling, they saw staff offering explanations and reassurance throughout. They also saw several examples where staff knew people's individual preferences and respected these in a caring and thoughtful way. For example, providing privacy while someone took their medicines and knowing the best way to speak with one person so they could hear them. Throughout their visit there was a friendly and homely atmosphere evident, with people appearing comfortable.

Nicola said: “Everyone at The Terrace, including the kitchen, domestic and maintenance teams, strives to ensure that we create genuinely individual care for each resident.
“To do that, we ensure we get to know each person, their history and their interests, so that we can tailor each care plan to maintain their independence, life skills and sense of wellbeing.”
