Hailsham care home welcomes community to raise awareness of dementia

Home news

Bowes House held a host of events when it took part in a national initiative to help raise awareness of dementia, Dementia Awareness Week.

The team welcomed the local community to the care home on Battle Road for a series of events between 15th-19th May.

At the care home, the team members held a Dementia Friends session and Carers support group, where guests were treated to a special afternoon tea. The team also represented Care UK when they visited the Dementia Awareness Community event and Wealden Dementia Action Alliance Celebration event. At both events, team members were on hand to provide information for those caring for a loved one with dementia.

The home ended the week with a special unveiling of its new wishing tree, where residents can submit their written wishes and suggestions for activities which the home strive to achieve.

Helena Barrow, home manager at Bowes House, said: “We were thrilled that so many people from the local community joined us to take part in Dementia Awareness Week. There were so many exciting and informative events taking place throughout the week, and we were delighted to top it all off with the launch of our new wishing tree at the home.

“I hope the insights and experience of the experts we had on hand will have broadened local people’s understanding of dementia and help Hailsham take a step closer to becoming a dementia-friendly community. For those looking for more information on caring for a loved one with dementia, our new guide, A helping hand, is available at the home and can offer further support and guidance.”
