The residents and team members at Kingsfield teamed up with local horticultural business, Edible Culture, which suggested flowers and fragrant herbs to create sensory areas within the garden, and with nearby Abbey School.
Year 9 pupils were briefed by Edible Culture and spent their final term designing and making planters during their technology class. The planters were made at the perfect height for wheelchair users and some had caster wheels allowing them to be moved inside. These were then bought by Kingsfield to use for the garden project, with a contribution going towards the school.
Once the planters had been designed, the students and residents were able to get planting and worked together to create walk ways surrounded by flowers and greenery. The planters were also decorated with paints and varnish to add extra colour.
Theresa Dark, customer relations manager at Kingsfield commented: “The garden project has been a huge success, and it was fantastic to strengthen our ties to the local community.
Both the residents and students thoroughly enjoyed getting involved, and it was fantastic to see the different generations working so brilliantly together, combining their ideas and skills and creating special bonds along the way.”
Gary Parsons, Year 9 technology teacher at Abbey School, commented: “When we were approached by Kingsfield to join their garden project we jumped at the chance to take part. We love to provide our students with real people and situations to design for, and it was fantastic for them to see their hard work put to good use.
“At Abbey School we think it’s really important to immerse our students into the community to learn from different generations. The joint project gave our students that chance to meet the friendly residents at Kingfield and share their stories and knowledge.”
