Harrow pupils help bring new care home to life

Company news

Primary school children have chosen the names of the four suites at a new care home in Harrow which is being built by Care UK.

Pupils from St. George’s Catholic Primary School took part in a competition to name the four suites at Buchanan Court. The children came up with a list of names that have cultural or historical references to the local area.

When the home opens later this year the suites will be named after four notable figures from Harrow:

  • The ‘Rosen Suite’ named after children’s author, Michael Rosen
  • The ‘Byron Suite’, after Lord Byron, a famous poet from the area
  • The ‘Winston Suite’ to commemorate one of the town’s most important former residents, Winston Churchill
  • The ‘Elton Suite’, named after musician, Sir Elton John

As a thank you to all who took part, Care UK presented the winning children with individual book tokens, as well as voucher for the school to buy new books for all the children to enjoy.

Samantha Neal, customer relations manager at Buchanan Court, said: “As we gear up to welcome the first residents to Buchanan Court later this year, the all-important naming of the suites within the care home is a priority. We thought this presented an excellent opportunity to work with St. George’s Catholic Primary School and to get to know our neighbours a little better.”

Shirley Sexton, class teacher at the school, added: “The suite naming activity not only gave the children an excellent opportunity to learn all about the new care home here in Harrow but it also encouraged them to think about the history and geography of their local area when seeking out inspiration for their entries. The activity was enjoyed by all the children here and we hope to do more with Samantha and the team at Buchanan Court in the future.”

The new care home, which will feature 80 en-suite bedrooms, has been designed to enable its residents to live active and fulfilled lives while also promoting independence. It will incorporate space for hobby and leisure activities and will include a cinema, hairdressing salon and café.

Buchanan Court will replace a home which Care UK ran on the site until a few years ago.
