Perry Manor welcomes Scouts for day of fun and friendships

Residents at Perry Manor welcomed a local Scout group, to help the youngsters boost their badge collection. 

Perry Manor welcomed girls and boys from 20th Worcester Scouts for the day, where they took part in a range of activities to work towards the World Challenge Award. 

The team of Scouts joined in with a range of intergenerational activities at the care home, from pizza-making to balloon tennis, and provided helping hands to residents during the lunch service.  

A day of fun and friendships was had by all, with both residents and Scouts benefitting from the cross-generation interaction and looking forward to joining forces in the future, to help the group earn more awards and badges.

Katherine Matthews, home manager at Perry Manor, said: “We have a very close relationship with 20th Worcester Scouts, so were delighted to welcome them in to the home to enhance their skills. The communication, interactions and affection betwe

en residents and the children was heart-warming to see – they loved spending time with each other. 

“As the Scouts were earning their World Challenge Award, which features a community involvement task, there were lots of activities for them to help with, which the residents thoroughly enjoyed, so it really was a rewarding day for all.

“We are always looking for innovative ways to involve residents in activities and encourage new friendships, and this visit was a great opportunity to create special bonds across the generations – young and older people alike really benefit from the social interaction. We look forward to another visit from the Scouts very soon!”

Helen Russell, leader at 20thWorcester Scouts, added: “Bringing the children to Perry Manor for a day of helping out is all part of building their character, and the benefits for both the residents and the children are infinite. 

“Scouting gives young people skills for life, whether that is practical skills or soft skills like confidence, which I am sure they have picked up from their visit.”

Young Scout Sophie, commented: “Helping out with serving the lunch was my favourite part of the day. Speaking to residents and helping serve their lunch was really memorable for me.”

Fellow Scout Robbie adds: “I liked making pizzas with the residents and talking to them, as they could share their cookery tips and tricks.”

Resident Hazel concludes: “Being surrounded by children is good for us all, and makes us feel younger.”
